Volvo S60 R-Design headed for Paris, other variants under consideration Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:37 PM PDT Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Wagon, Paris Motor Show, Volvo, Diesel 2011 Volvo S60 – Click above for high-res image gallery Although the first examples of Volvo’s new-for-2011 S60 sedan won’t hit North American showrooms until later this month, Autoblog has learned that the Swedish automaker will unveil a sporty new R-Design derivative at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. Volvo of North America’s Vice President of Public Affairs, Geno Effler confirmed the debut Thursday during a media Q&A session at this week’s U.S. launch of the S60 in Portland, Oregon. The S60 R-Design will join Volvo’s growing range of performance styled models that includes the XC60, XC90, S40/V50 and C30 hatchback. Effler did not give further details regarding the hotted-up S60, but other models in the series have included rejiggered suspensions, body kits, unique wheels and a host of minor interior upgrades. It is not known if the already sharp-looking S60 will receive more than cosmetic changes in its transformation into a R-Design model, however. At launch, the $37,700 all-wheel drive S60 will be marketed with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine good for 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque, which should certainly be enough to make the R-Design interesting, even if no further powertrain upgrades are in store. Future S60 variants are expected to include a front-drive, five-cylinder volume model that’s due to hit the market early next year. Hybrid and diesel models also continue to be evaluated under Volvo’s new ownership and leadership (China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group and former Volkswagen bigwig Stefan Jacoby, respectively), but as of yet, nothing has been committed to for the North American market. One model that will definitely not be available in the States is a wagon variant of the S60. With estate sales in the dumpster for the brand (Volvo once sold over 40,000 load luggers per year in the U.S. – it presently sells around 1,800 units), Effler confirmed that a V70 reprisal does not make sense for North America, though the model will continued to be offered in Europe. A replacement for the XC70 softroader based on the new S60 is widely expected to make up the shortfall, however. Report: Helicopter crashes on Pikes Peak while filming Audi commercial *UPDATE Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:36 PM PDT Filed under: Etc., Audi, Volkswagen, Specialty Audi Autonomous TTS Pikes Peak – Click above for high-res image gallery A helicopter carrying four crew members filming a commercial for Volkswagen/Audi has crashed near the summit of the famed Pikes Peak Highway just west of Colorado Springs, Colorado, in El Paso County. The pilot is reportedly in critical condition, and three passengers are listed as stable. Due to the location of the crash, a medical helicopter is unable to reach the victims, so crews are attempting to transfer the injured to nearby Crystal Creek Reservoir, which is the closest the medics were able to get. Hazmat crews have reportedly been dispatched to clean up a 150-gallon fuel spill from the crash. According to KKTV in Southern Colorado, the crew was filming Audi’s driverless car as it navigated to the summit of Pikes Peak. Click past the break for a couple videos of Shelley, Audi’s autonomous TTS, in action. Thanks for the tip, Mason! *Update: Audi’s official statement on the incident is pasted after the break. Lotus gifts Toyota an Elise with last 2ZZ engine Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:36 PM PDT Filed under: Japan, Lotus, Toyota Lotus CEO Dany Bahar presents Akio Toyoda with a Lotus Elise R – Click for high-res gallery The last Toyota 2ZZ-GE VVTLi four cylinder engine has been built, and Lotus got it. Lotus CEO Dany Bahar and Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda came together at the British Embassy in Tokyo for a celebration where Toyota was presented with an Elise R carrying the engine by Bahar. The shindig marks a new chapter in the two companies’ partnership, one that will allow Lotus to create powertrains that are more exclusively its own in future cars with the continued cooperation of Toyota. Designed for Toyota by Yamaha, the 2ZZ-GE engine owed a lot to motorcycle engine practice, and the wide-angled valves and variable valve timing and lift system enabled the high-revving engine to develop 100 horsepower per liter, and even more when supercharged. Power levels floated between 160-180 hp naturally aspirated and as much as 250 when supercharged and intercooled. The question now is what engine Lotus and Toyota will cook up to take the place of the 2ZZ-GE, now that its veteran power unit has been retired. We should find out more on that front at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. Follow the jump to see the press release. Suzuki SX4 blacks out for UK special edition Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:35 PM PDT Filed under: Hatchback, Suzuki, UK Suzuki SX4 SZ-L – Click above for high-res image gallery Suzuki has released details on a new special edition version of its SX4 for the UK. Called the SZ-L, the five-door will come from the factory wearing a host of appearance upgrades aimed to give the vehicle an urban flair, including a few splashes of gunmetal accents on the roof rails, grille, wheels and skid plates. The gray theme continues on inside with Alcantara trim in all the right places and ghost stitching around the leather steering wheel. Unfortunately, as awesome as all of the menacing gunmetal trim is, the hatchback’s mechanicals leave something to be desired. Instead of pairing the blacked-out goodies with the company’s bones-cheap all-wheel drive system, the SZ-L is only available with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine powering the front-wheels. That blows one sad trombone in our book. The upshot is that Suzuki is only offering the special edition with a five-speed manual, so slusher fans need not apply. The Suzuki SX4 SZ-L starts at $20,533 in the UK (at current conversion rates) and there’s no word as to whether or not a similar model will show up on our shores. Hit the jump for the press release. 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT: The key to changing map discs Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:35 PM PDT Filed under: Sedan, Subaru, Long-Term Garage How to swap map discs in a 2011 Subaru Legacy – Click above to watch video after the jump Pop quiz: Where’s the slot to swap out DVD map discs for the 2010 Subaru Legacy’s navigation system? No, it’s not the one you can see with your eyes in the image above; that’s the slot for audio CDs. The DVD drive is hidden. Answer: behind that blue plastic panel located directly beneath the CD slot. Since the nav system in the 2010 Subaru legacy doesn’t contain an entire atlas of North America on an internal hard drive, you’ll sometimes have to change the map disc if where you’re headed is on a different disc. I discovered this when having to make the trek from Ohio to Michigan because maps for the Wolverine State were on a different region disc than the one that was already loaded. The manual, of course, makes the process of popping off this panel seem easy. Put your thumb on the top of the panel and lift the panel up from the bottom. In reality, the nearly invisible recess at the bottom of the panel is blocked by the buttons below it, and unless you have long and particularly strong fingernails, the tight-fitting panel’s not coming off without some outside assistance. A pocket knife would work best, but all I had at the time was a small key. Since I didn’t want to scratch the aforementioned buttons, I tried lifting the panel off a little to the right of the recess. With much effort and a grunt for good measure, the panel came flying off the console. Most people won’t be swapping map discs very often, as each one contains a large chunk of the country in which to navigate. But even if I had the fingernail length required for the job, I still wouldn’t like having to pop off a cheap panel to do it. Follow the jump for video of a staged recreation of my first encounter with this panel. Review: 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:33 PM PDT Filed under: Convertible, Performance, Porsche, Reviews, Luxury, Racing A playful companion with razor-sharp claws 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder – Click above for high-res image gallery “More for Less.” It’s the call to prayer of every car salesman to ever don a plaid jacket. Guys with sturdy names like Wally and Chuck would stop dead in their tracks and tell Porsche “Pal, this Boxster Spyder thing, you’re all upside-down.” You see, with the 2011 Boxster Spyder, Porsche has inverted the polarity on “more for less.” You pay more but get less. The Boxster Spyder has a high-performance mission: It’s a race car that doesn’t need a trailer. Porsche undertook a lightening program that started with a Boxster S and stripped a slew of equipment, lowered the suspension 3/4 of an inch and substituted aluminum for steel where possible in the body. One-hundred seventy-six pounds later, you’ve got a Boxster Spyder; lighter, lower, sharper. Has it worked for Porsche to go the Lotus route of obsessive weight reduction? Find out after the jump. Mercedes-Benz unveils the limited production A-Class E-Cell electric vehicle Posted: 17 Sep 2010 07:30 PM PDT Filed under: Minivan/Van, Europe, Paris Motor Show, Hatchback, Mercedes-Benz, Electric Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-Cell – Click above for high-res image gallery Mercedes-Benz has dropped the curtain on its latest electrical wonder, the A-Class E-Cell. The vehicle is scheduled for a limited production run of just 500 units, with lucky lessees in Germany, France and The Netherlands expected to receive the majority of them. Unfortunately, a company spokesman told Inside Line that the A-Class E-Cell will not show up on U.S. soil. This Europe-only offering showcases Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to electric drive technology and will be produced at the company’s Rastatt plant in Germany. The four-door, five-passenger, minivanish-looking E-Cell is based on the company’s standard A-Class hatchback. The electric goodies include a 70kW (peak output, 95 horsepower) motor that churns out a rather remarkable 214 pound-feet of torque and twin lithium-ion batteries that supposedly provide up to 124 miles of range between charges. Top speed is a highway-capable 93 miles per hour. Speaking of that electric motor and powerful battery pack, Mercedes-Benz has the following to say:
